NEW BILLBOARD HOT 100 RECORD

Two years ago, Despacito a song by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Beiber finished a 16 run as the number one song in the country according to Billboard Magazine. Had it managed to go one more week at the top, it would have broken the all time record set by Mariah Carey and Boys II Men's song One Sweet Day in 1996.

However, this past summer, the record was broken.

Old Town Road, a rap/country hybrid by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, broke the record jointly held by Boys II Men/Carey and Fonsi/Yankee/Beiber.

My first question.... Billy Ray Cyrus? Really?

Forget about setting records, if someone at the beginning of 2019 came up to me and said, "Billy Ray Cyrus will have a number 1 hit this year and Miley Cyrus won't, I'd have had your head examined. I mean, after Donald Trump was elected President, I figured there was nothing left to blow my mind. Well, this did it folks.

I've never head of Lil Nas X and to be honest, I've only heard the song a few times, mainly because I really listen to terrestrial radio anymore. Is this due to a dearth of decent music? Of course answering that in the affirmative will make me sound like the old fart that I am. But what the hell.

Are the songs better now than they were?  Or were there better songs to choose from back then?

Consider this..... In 1974 there were 36 number one hits out of 52 weeks. In 1975 there were 35.

In 2015, there were 9. Only 9 songs made it to number 1. In 2016 it was 11. 2017 and 2018 had 12.
This year, so far there have been 10. Considering one of those 10 was number one for almost 5 months. that's pretty impressive.

The Beatles song that stayed the longest at number 1 was 9 weeks for Hey Jude in 1968. They lead the pack with 20 number ones. Elvis and Mariah Carey are tied for second with 18. Rihanna and Michael Jackson round out the top 5 with 14 and 13 respectively.

One more factoid to chew on here... What do Lorne Greene, Rick Dees and The Singing Nun have in common?

All three have more number one hits than does Bruce Springsteen.
