Honoring the Greats

Watching the tribute to the 1994 Rangers on Friday, I had the feeling the 2019 Rangers were going to lay an egg. After all, I thought every time they have one of these pre game tributes, whther its to a team or retiring someone's number, the current team usually loses. At least that was my theory.

However, it's not really the case.

Rangers

Mike Richter, February 4, 2004 lose to Wild 4-3
Adam Graves February 3, 2009 lose to Thrashers 2-1
Brian Leetch January 24, 2008 beat Thrashers 2-1
Mark Messier January 12, 2006 beat Oilers 5-4

Mets

20th Anniversary of 1986  August 19, 2006-Mets Beat Rockies 7-4
Mike Piazza- July 30, 2016 lose to Rockies 7-2
30th Anniversary of 1986 Mets May 28, 2016- Lose to Dodgers 9-1

Knicks

Patrick Ewing- February 28, 2003 Knicks beat Magic 2 OT.
40th anniversary of 1973- April 5, 2013 Knicks beat Bucks 101-83

These are the only ones I can think of, I know the Rangers have retired Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle amongst others the last couple of years. I'm not sure how they have done. I could have sworn the Knicks lost to the Magic the night they retired Patrick Ewing's number. I also thought the Rangers lost on Mark Messier night, but they beat Edmonton that night. I guess my memory is not as good as it used to be. Or maybe I'm just used to my teams losing all the time.
