1924-Chamonix, France     The first Winter Games includes a prize for mountaineering, given to British explorer Charles Granville Bruce for his ascent of Everest in 1922

1928 St. Moritz, Switzerland Features two demonstration sports – skijoring, where skiers are towed behind horses, and military patrol

1932 Lake Placid (NY) USA the American winning team in the four-man bobsled includes Eddie Eagan, who also won a gold medal in boxing at the 1920 Summer Olympics

1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany     Combined skiing races (downhill and slalom) are introduced, the first time alpine skiing events are featured at the Olympic

1948-St. Moritz, Switzerland Includes the demonstration sport of winter pentathlon, which involves downhill skiing, a 10km cross-country ski race, fencing, shooting and horse riding (Damn!)

1952-Oslo, Norway Giant slalom is included in the alpine skiing for the first time;

1956-Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy Austrian skier Toni Sailer achieves a clean sweep, winning gold in the men's downhill, slalom and giant slalom

1960-Squaw Valley (CA) USA  opening and closing ceremonies are produced by Walt Disney

1964-Innsbruck, Austria French sisters Marielle and Christine Goitschel dominate the slalom and giant slalom races, each winning one gold medal and one silver

1968-Grenoble, France France triumphs again, as Jean-Claude Killy wins all three alpine events – he won his second overall World Cup in the same year

1972- Sapporo, Japan-Olympic organisers crack down on non-amateur athletes, banning Austrian ski racer Karl Schranz for receiving sponsorship from ski manufacturers

1976-Innsbruck, Austria-Innsbruck hosts for the second time after Denver, Colorado, withdraws its winning bid

1980-Lake Placid (NY) USA- Do you believe in miracles?

1984-Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina (at the time Yugoslavia) Figure skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean win gold for Great Britain in the ice dancing, with perfect scores across the board for artistic impression

1988-Calgary (Alberta) Canada The year of the underdog, as Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards represents Britain in ski jumping and the Jamaican bobsleigh team makes its Olympic debut

1992-Albertsville, France Italy's Alberto Tomba wins gold in giant slalom and silver in slalom, adding to his two gold medals from Calgary; freestyle skiing becomes an Olympic discipline

1994-Lillehammer, Norway American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan claims a silver medal, despite being injured before the Games by an attacker hired by a rival skater's ex-husband (Translation-Tonya Harding ex kneecapped Nancy Kerrigan) 

1998-Nagano, Japan Austrian ski racer Hermann Maier wins gold in the slalom and giant slalom after crashing in the downhill; snowboarding makes its debut at the Olympics. 
ALSO-US Men's hockey team trashes hotel

2002- Salt Lake City (UT) USA-US Men's hockey team loses gold medal game to Canada 5-2 after much whining by Team Canada GM Wayne Gretzky

2006-Turin, Italy-Snowboarding makes it's debut and the US dominates.

2010 Vancouver (BC), Canada-US takes Canada to OT in the Gold Medal game on their home ice, only to lose on a goal by Cindy Crosby

2014 Sochi, Russia-US does well despite Russian meddling.

2018 PyeongChang, South Korea

2022 Beijing, China
