Non-Endorsement Draft

Every September, as I'm getting ready to start another season of Weekly Mail, I go back to the very first post I made when we started up again in 2015. On that post, I wrote the following paragraph...

There are a lot of things that I like about Donald Trump and his run for the Republican Nomination. He's self made, so he's not beholden to special interests to raise money, He's also not beholden to the party line, as his plan to raise taxes on the wealthy have his fellow Republican's breaking out in hives, and although I realize he has had his share of business failures, he's also had some very huge successes.

There have been many times I have considered deleting this post, just pretending I started writing the following week. Most people would be none the wiser. But there's two big reasons I wouldn't do that. One because it's intellectually dishonest.

But also, it kind of serves as a lesson, as we once again, for the third time have to see the person I nicknamed Captain Orange, run for the highest office in the land. And the lesson is this..

It's not too late.

It's not too late to realize that everything about him is a charade, that at the end of the day, he's nothing more than a carnival barker, a street hustler.

A conman.

Look, I bought into it. Look at that paragraph, folks. He's self-made? Wrong, he inherited all that $$ from his old man. The money he has now is from slapping his name on things other people built. Just like he slapped his name on the tail end of the Obama economy. And from being a game show host.

Not beholden to special interests to raise money? For Christ Sake, every time he gets indicted, the first thing he does is ask "How can we fundraise off of this?"  (And not for nothing, there are very few people on earth I can use the phrase every time he gets indicted about. Most mere mortals get indicted once or twice and then their careers are done.)

Not beholden to the party line? The party line for as long as I've been alive was making abortion illegal. Yeah, silly me, I figured the guy who cheated on his first wife with his second wife and his second wife with his third wife, and his third wife with a porn actress, and who knows how many others in between, would want to make sure, in case he slipped one passed the goalie, that at least they could have an abortion. But there he is, taking credit for appointing the three justices that helped overturn Roe v Wade, while whining that all he did was leave it up to the states. Right. States that want to make all abortions, no matter what, illegal.

I get it. Washington DC is dysfunctional. It seemed like a great idea at the time, to have someone come in from the outside, someone who had never run for office, someone who didn't need the job, to come in and clean it all up.

I get it.

Here's what I don't get.

How can anyone look at what he has done, both in the four years he was in charge, and the four years since he has left, and say-"That's the guy we need."

Again, forget what you thought before he won in 2016. Many of us were guilty of that. I was, at least in the very beginning. I thought maybe an outsider is what the country needed.

But not this guy. At this point, he is everything you wanted to get rid of in D.C.

And about a million times worse.

If you are being honest with yourself, you can't help but see it.

But too many people aren't being honest with themselves. Too many people are clinging to the idea that Trump was the guy who was going to "drain the swamp." when all he did was bring in his self-serving flunkies, who were either unable or unwilling (and usually both) to accomplish anything.

Too many people look at the list of indiscretions this man has committed and convinced themselves that the media has made the whole thing up. Fake news, they yell. Liberal bias they scream.

Guess what. I agree there is liberal bias. There is a great book called Media Inc written by Matt Taibi who makes the case that all cable news is about is selling a product. In the case of CNN and MSNBC, that product is left-leaning news. In FOX's case it's right wing news.

But here's the thing. There's a big difference between liberal bias and fake news.

You think the media is making up all of this?

They're making up how he has acted around Vladimir Putin? Taking Putin's word over that of his own intelligence team about Russian election hacking? And his letters to Kim Jung Un? Two dictators who he says himself he admires?

They're making up all the numbers of people who died because of the pandemic? I mean some of you think they actually made up the pandemic! Ask those families who lost loved ones or who are still recovering from long term COVID. Ask people who were working in the hospitals trying to save people or at the very least make them more comfortable before they passed. A lot of those doctors and nurses were wearing garbage bags instead of scrubs. I know because I saw it myself. But to you, I'm full of shit. Me and the liberal media.

I guess they are also making up the fact that Trump, in maybe one of the few things he managed to get right, was able to get funding to get the vaccines up and running. Only after his minions told him that some of his supporters were anti-vax did he act like someone else came up with that.

They're making up what happened on January 6th. Making up stories about cops getting killed, politicians running for their lives, our government being attacked by nothing less than domestic terrorists?  They're making up the fact that several people, including Kevin McCarthy and even his own kids pleaded with him to call it off and he did nothing? They're also making up the fact that Trump wants to pardon the very same people who were determined to kill Vice President Pence, Speaker Pelosi and anyone else who stood in the way of overturning a free and fair election?

And of course, they are making up the fact that the 2020 election was free and fair in the first place. That every legal challenge was overruled, even by judges appointed by Trump himself. That Dominion voting systems was paid almost $1 billion, that two elections workers in Georgia can move into Rudy Guiliani's swanky apartment in Manhattan pretty much anytime they want because he falsely accused them of election impropriety.

It's all bullshit?

All of it?

And these are just the big ones. And in years past any one of these indiscretions would at the very least disqualify you from seeing the White House again. Shoot, in a sane world, it would land you in prison.

Yet, here we are.  Just hours away from the 2024 election.

Kamala Harris isn't perfect. Neither is Joe Biden. I don't agree with everything she says or all of her policies. Same with him. But I do believe that they care about this country and that they are not bigger than the office they are seeking/currently holding.

I felt the same way about Barack Obama.

And John McCain

And George Bush, both of them.

And both Clintons.

Even Richard Nixon. For all the crap he pulled, nobody ever questioned his love and honor for his country. I once read a book where the author asked someone about Richard Nixon, and the person being interviewed answered. "An absolutely brilliant mind. One of the brightest, most well-read people I have ever met."

The person being interviewed who gave that answer was Jimmy Carter, the man who was elected to the presidency in part because of Americans anger towards Watergate. Jimmy Carter was another man who put his country before himself. As did the man he defeated for the White House, Gerald Ford.

Ronald Reagan too.

Trump isn't just the worst President in my lifetime. (I've mentioned all the people who have been President in my lifetime above, and some who ran against them) He's the worst to ever hold the office.

By far.

In 2016, he ran as a lark. In 2020, he ran because he was power drunk. He's running now because it's the only way he knows for sure he won't be going to jail. He's running because it's the only way he knows he can definitely make himself richer. You think you are making America Great Again when you donate to his campaign, or buy his hats, and sneakers and whatever other shit he's selling you. All you are doing is giving your money to him.

And you think he's insulting other people. You think he's insulting the libs.

You think he's insulting me.

He's playing you for a sucker. There's no bigger insult than that.

I was really going back and forth on this. I know most people have their minds made up, had them made up a long time ago. I also think the idea of losing friends and fighting with family over politics is generally stupid. Every once in a while, I look at my FB memories. I see some of the heartfelt messages I received after particularly hard times. Some of the kindest messages I received are from people who have Add Friend next to them. Meaning they were FB friends of mine and now are not. I can't say for certain, but I believe most of those former connections, became former connections because of things I've said about Trump.

It's too bad, but it is what it is.

There are some people whose posts I see and to be honest, I couldn't care less if they clicked the unfriend button. They're so far down the rabbit hole, they are beyond being rational with. They're the basket of deplorables Hillary talked about. I saw a meme saying that some of these people have gotten so bad, you wouldn't tell them where Anne Frank was hiding.

I'm not writing this blog to them.

I'm writing this to you. The Trump supporter who thinks Trump is simply the lesser of two evils. Who thinks he's just a big mouth but not a criminal. Who still thinks he's an outsider, a self made man who is self funding his campaign. Who mean tweets but still gets things done, unlike Biden who make nice tweets but gets nothing done. To those who probably wouldn't invite him to your house or let him alone with your daughter but shit, he's better than Kamala or Sleepy Joe.

It's not too late.

Please think logically. You really don't think it's all made up do you?

All of it?

Do you?

SPEECH FOR AUGUST 5

Mom and Dad- One time on the Tonight Show, Jay Leno was paying tribute to his parents, when he said “You know here in Hollywood, you hear all these stories about celebrities who had these awful childhoods. You'lll never hear me say anything like that, because nobody was raised righter than I was.”That’s how I feel. And I believe my sisters will testify to that too. Thank you Mom and Dad for everything you have done. You gave us everything we needed, and you showed us what unconditional love was all about. No one was raised righter than we were.

Krissy and Katie- there was a song several years ago which was basically someone giving advice to a graduating class. He said “Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to the past and the people most likely to stick by you in the future.” You guys have always done that for me, and I hope that I have done that for you. I'm the oldest and  should be the one setting the example, but more often that not, I'm the one following your lead.

And that also applies to my cousins too. Deirdre, Chris Saoirse and Mannix (joke about nap) I wish Aunt Eileen was here, but I know she’s having a good time now, watching all this. I know she’s getting a kick out of me turning 50. Thank you guys for everything.

To my nieces and nephews,  Connor, Rachel, Finley, Brendan, and of course to our forever angel Becky. I love you guys to the moon and back.I'm so proud of all of you.  Thank you for making me your favorite uncle (or at least for putting me in the running)

There’s another line in that sunscreen song, “Understand that friends come and go but a precious few you should hold on to. I’m lucky I have had more than a few. So whether I met you in kindergarten (Karl, Ray, Mary) or high school, (Kevin) or if you were lucky enough to marry these fine folks, or if you were protecting your little sister from me (Patti-Ann)” I’m so grateful for all of you. Thank u guys for your love and friendship.

So many people complain about their in-laws, but not me man. I miss my father in law Tim every day, but I still hear his voice, especially around the New Year, when Notre Dame is inevitably getting blown out by a team from the SEC, I hear "men against boys Billy, Men against boys."

to My mother in law, Joan, I have leaned on you for advice, you’ve cheered me up when I needed it, and you are one of my biggest supporters, especially when I’m driving and getting nagged by someone we won’t mention. You’re amazing. Love you so much.

To my sisters in law Kerry and Megs, I could not have asked for better. We’ve had so many good times, and so many laughs.

To my brothers in law Brian and Steve. Brian, you and Kerry first went out the night Tara and I met. So we've been on this ride together from day one. I'm glad it's you and me.

Steve: if the only thing you did was make Krissy a happy woman, that would be enough. The fact of the matter is, you have been a ray of sunshine for all of us, my parents, Katie and me Tara and Tim. Thank you so much for all you do.

To the O’Shea’s: thank you for making me part of the family, all of you have made me feel like I’ve always belonged. Our cousin's get togethers have been a blast. To Uncle Shawn, Aunt Joyce, Heather, Brian and Ryan, I have just one thing to say. OOOOOOOOOOSHEA!

Now, one week from tonight, it’s going to be 19 years since the the day I call the first day of the rest of my life. That was the night 8/12/2004 I walked into Murphy’s Law in Manhattan and walked out early the next morning with the phone number of the woman who was going to be my forever partner, my ride or die, my best friend in the world. Tara, you are incredibly smart, very funny, tough when you have to be while always extremely compassionate. And to put up with me for all these years, you need all of those qualities. To my beautiful wife, who was the key in putting all this together, I don’t know where I would be without you, thank you so much. I love you forever.

Tara has given me so much but the two best are this crazy fun loving family, and this guy here.

Tim, if nobody ever told me what a kind, respectful, considerate, compassionate and funny guy you are it wouldn't matter. Because I see it and Mom sees it and JoJo, Pop, Grandma and Grandpa see it, and everyone here sees it. But the fact of the matter is anyone who crosses paths with you, be it teachers, coaches camp counselors and parents of other kids all say to me just that. We are so proud of you and the young man you are turning into.

You know, all of you who have known me, especially the ones who knew me longer, know that one thing that I've been good at these last 50 years is beating myself up for things that I've done wrong. When I see Tara and Timmy, I see what I've gotten so right. Thank you both for completing me.

And for all of you, thank you for being there for me all these years. I love all of you.

Slainte!

NOTES FOR AUGUST 5

SUNDAY AUGUST 5, 1973..

WEATHER

HIGH TEMP 88

LOW TEMP 67

HUMIDITY 78

Hi Everyone:

Hope you are all staying cool. Today, was hot enough, but yesterday was worse, hot and sticky. It was so humid last night, I ended up going to see a movie just to sit in an air-conditioned movie theater. Got to take in my first R-rated movie.

More on that later, for now, we'll start off with some news, bad news at that.

TERRORISM- Airport Attack in Athens.

Two Arab terrorists tossed hand grenades and opened fire with machine guns this morning in the transit lounge of Athens Airport. Two Americans were killed and 55 total were injured in the attack.

The men were arrested and claimed to be part of Black September, the same creeps that ruined last summer's Olympics in Munich, West Germany. However the PLO denied any responsibility for the attack.

According to police reports, the terrorists actual target was a TWA flight heading to Tel Aviv, but mistakenly attacked passengers waiting to board a TWA flight to New York.

The two dead Americans were a 55 year old plumber and a 23 year old woman from New Jersey. This hits close to home.1

According to the FAA, the past 4 years have been the most prevalent time for skyjackings. Earlier this year, the FAA mandated that all airports be equipped with metal detectors and that all passengers must pass through them. It's horrible that it's come to this, but this is where we are here in 1973. Hopefully it gets better.

OK, onto less serious but also aggravating news...

Daily News Game Story

BASEBALL: Mets get swept:

Losing sucks, we all know that. It's bad enough to lose a game that the other team is trying to beat you at. But when you lose a game in which the other team is practically handing it to you, that's just unacceptable.

That's what happened to the Mets this afternoon at Shea in their doubleheader against the Cardinals.

Tom Seaver was scheduled to pitch in the opener. So Cardinals manager Red Schoendienst decided to save his ace, Rick Wise for the nightcap. He started Alan Foster against Seaver.

"I'm not conceding, Foster can win" Schoendienst told the writers before the first game, before, well conceding.

"Seaver's a great pitcher. Look at what happened the last time he pitched against us." That was 10 days ago, where Seaver outpitched Wise 2-1.

Seaver as usual has been awesome, but also as usual is getting little run support.

Today he was merely very good, not great, which he is entitled to, and the Mets made Foster look like, well, Rick Wise, stranding a bunch of runners on base.

Wise went on to outpitch Jim McAndrew in the nightcap and the Mets ruined Banner Day at Shea.

They are now 48-60 and 11.5 games out of first. I know manager Yogi Berra keeps saying "It aint over till it’s over." But who the hell are we kidding here? I know the division isn't that great, but even in this crappy division, we're in last place. Sweeping or splitting against the first place Cards would have been a nice start to getting us out of the cellar. Instead here we are, in the basement. I appreciate Yogi’s optimism, too bad I don’t share it.

Put a fork in them kids. They done.2

There were two pitching performances this weekend to note: One, Yankee pitcher Lindy McDaniel pitched 13 innings of relief Saturday night in Detroit. 13 innings! Even for 1973 that's impressive. He was forced to come in when starter Fritz Peterson complained of a tightness in his thigh. This is a family bulletin, so I'll spare the "He hurt his leg fooling around with his new wife, Mike Kekich's former wife" jokes.3 Mcdaniel going 13 innings in the Yanks 3-2 win over the Tigers is the impressive story. They sit 1/2 game out of the AL East, tied with the Tigers and behind the Orioles for the division lead. Unlike my Mets, the Yanks have a good shot. Which will make their new owner happy. But even if they don't win, this new guy Steinbrenner, won't cause a ruckus, he said he's too busy building ships to get involved too much.4

And in Atlanta today, Phil Niekro knuckleballed his way to a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres, in front of 8,748 fans in steamy Fulton County Stadium. (10,000 people will claim to have been there I bet) Niekro is 34, has pitched for 11 seasons and it's safe to say he's on the back 9.5 So this was a nice cherry on the top of a good career. Seaver has come close a couple of times to pitching one. He could have pitched one today and still lost. But I digress. Congrats to Phil Niekro.

CONTROVERSY: Protest over new cop movie

A major Puerto Rican Advocacy group is filing a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, and several other groups are organizing boycotts of movie theaters showing Badge 373, starring Robert Duvall as a character based on decorated NYPD cop Eddie Egan.

According to a review in a national magazine, the film is "rife with references to language deeming to Puerto Ricans." It goes on to say that the film makes "disgraceful portrayal of Puerto Ricans as prostitutes, thieves and bomb throwing radicals."

Several African-American and Latino groups are planning a boycott of Paramount Pictures if the film is not removed from theaters by August 15.

So it's a good thing I went a saw it last night...6

MOVIE REVIEW: Badge 373

Starring: Robert Duvall, Verna Bloom, Henry Darrow, Eddie Egan

Saw it At: Elmwood Theater, Elmhurst NY

So again I want to reiterate, we had no idea of the controversy the movie was generating, we just wanted to get out of the heat. I'll give the Elmwood this, they have a ripping air conditioner.

As for the movie itself, yeah, I can see people being offended. I mean Duvall's character,Eddie Ryan, uses the S slur for Latinos about 50 times in the first 15 minutes. He chases a guy named Chico (I know) up to the roof of a club, and Chico was either pushed or he fell off the roof to his untimely demise. What upset me about that scene was that the actor playing Chico who was pushed/fell off the roof was none other than Luis Avalos who my fellow future Generation X'ers will recall as the bald guy with the mustache from PBS' the Electric Company.

Luis Avalos on The Electric Company

I have to admit it was hard to root for Eddie Ryan after Dr. Doolats bought it so early in the movie. Ryan gets suspended and his badge (373-see that?) is taken away. But in the meantime his partner is toutured and killed, so Ryan takes it upon himself to find out what happened.

Yeah, one of those movies.

Pete Hammil wrote the script, and he's no racist, but I'm guessing he was trying to make the movie more "realistic"? I don't know, I think the rule of them is when in doubt, add more a-holes and m'f-ckers, and stay away from the slurs.

2 Stars 7

Terrorist Attacks, Accusations of Racism in Movies, Lousy Baseball… looks like I picked a hell of a day to show up huh? Is there anything good to report?

Well, let’s see…

The Knicks are the defending NBA World Champions, that’s obviously a very good thing. 8

The Rangers have been very good the past two seasons and are considered one of the favorites to win and end their 33 year Stanley Cup drought in 1974. 9

The Jets have 3 players currently holding out, Winston Hill, Emerson Boozer and John Riggins. Hill and Boozer helped win the Jets Super Bowl III 5 years ago. Riggins led the team in rushing last year, but seems to be a bit of a head case.10 In any event Playboy’s Pigskin Preview says that if Joe Namath can stay healthy, the Jets could contend for a playoff spot. (I’m too young to look at the pictures in Playboy, so I really just read the articles) 11

If you follow the ABA, especially our New York Nets, they made a blockbuster deal just last week, sending George Carter, Kermit Washington and $$$ to the Virginia Squires for Dr. J himself, Julius Erving. If I’m the Nets, I make sure he retires in a Net uniform.12 All due respect to Clyde and Willis and the rest of my World Champion Knicks, but Dr. J is now the most exciting basketball player in New York.

There is great TV to watch too, this upcoming season. Here is your Saturday night lineup on Channel 2.13

8:00- All in the Family

8:30-M*A*S*H

9:00- The Mary Tyler Moore Show

9:30-The Bob Newhart Show

10:00 The Carol Burnett Show

I haven’t seen a rotation like that since the 1971 Orioles.14

As for music, here is this week’s top 10 songs according to Billboard Magazine, and counted down by Casey Kasem on American Top 40 (heard here in NY on 102 FM WPIX)15

1) The Morning After-Maureen McGovern

2) Bad Bad Leroy Brown-Jim Croce

3) Live and Let Die-Wings

4) Smoke on the Water-Deep Purple

5) Yesterday Once More-The Carpenters

6) Diamond Girl-Seals and Crofts

7) Touch Me in the Morning- Diana Ross

8) Brother Louie-Stories

9) Will it Go Round in Circles-Billy Preston

10) Shambala- Three Dog Night.

Wings, led by Paul McCartney has the number 3 song and also the number 40 song, former number 1 song My Love. George Harrison has the 31 song, also a former number one song Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth). John Lennon and Ringo Starr each have albums coming out in the fall. Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono split up last month. Who knows? Maybe if they all prove that they can all make magic on their own, it might inspire them to see what kind of magic they can still do together. A Beatles reunion would be awesome.16

So you see it's not all bad. Not all bad at all.

It's great to be here. Think I'll stick around.

See ya when I meet ya

Have a Great (2608.9) Week(s)

*********************************************************************

1) 5 Americans ended up dying in the attack. One of them, who died on September 21, 1973, was a 24 year old man from Oceanside.

2)

3) Ben Affleck and Matt Damon had supposedly been working on a movie about the Fritz Peterson-Mike Keckich family swap. Not sure what became of it. If you never heard of it Google it up.

4) George actually said something to this effect at the press conference announcing his purchase of the Yankees from CBS on January 3, 1973. To say he didn’t keep that promise might be the understatement of the century.

5) Niekro pitched 14 more seasons including 1984 and 1985 with the Yankees. His last start for the Yanks, he won his 300th game.

6) My mom and dad had just bought the house in Woodside, and hadn’t gotten an air conditioner yet. To get some relief, they went to the Elmwood theatre, right across from St. John’s Hospital where I would be born the following day.

7) I had heard the story of my folks taking in a flick the night before I was born a bunch of times, but it wasn’t till I started researching for this blog that came across the stories about the protests. For a refresher I rented it off Amazon a couple of weeks ago. It’s a typical 70’s cop movie, Duvall was just looking for a paycheck between Godfather movies IMHO.

8) That’s a sentence that hasn’t been uttered in well 50 years.

9) They lost to the Flyers in the Conference Finals in 74. The drought would go another 20 years.

10) Riggins played 2 more seasons for the Jets, till they let him walk to the Redskins, where he played in 2 Super Bowls, winning the MVP in Super Bowl XVII.

11) Many years ago my friends and I came across a box that had Playboy Magazines from 1972 through 1974. That was an actual prediction from the August 1973 issue. Spoiler alert-Namath missed most of the season and the Jets went 4-10.

12) The cash strapped Nets traded Erving to the Sixers in 1977.

13) I did a book review a couple of years back called Rock Me on the Water, that made the case that 1974 was Hollwodd's most influential year. It cited this lineup as one of its cases in point.

14) The 2nd and last starting rotation in MLB history to feature four 20 game winners. Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Pat Dobson and Dave McNally.

15) Sirius/XM replays classic Casey Kasem AT40's every weekend. When they replayed the one originally broadcast on 8/4/1973, Casey mentioned WPIX-FM New York City as one of his featured radio stations of the week 'AT 40 is heard every week on great radio stations like....

16) Awesome but alas not to be.

Weekly Mail Christmas Eve Special 2022

                                                 Christmas Eve 2022 -Rockefeller Center (16° F)

Thank you for tuning in.

The average temperature for Christmas in New York City is 41°/29°. The coldest Christmas in my lifetime was the year my sister Kate was born. 13° for a high in 1983. In 1980, the low actually went below 0°, but I think the high was above 13.

This year, we practically had a tropical storm on the 22nd, followed by plunging temperatures throughout the 23rd, till we got to today's frigid weather. It only got up to 16 today in NYC.

So I hope you are all OK and are all dealing with the cold. I actually wore a hat and gloves today in the city (I took them off for the annual selfie with the Rockefeller Center tree) And I hope you are enjoying Christmas Eve and looking forward to a wonderful Christmas Day tomorrow.

1) Do They Know It's Christmas Time-Band Aid- Yeah maybe one of these days, I'll get so sick of this song that it will drop down the list. Hasn't happened yet. Still sounds great 38 years on...

2) Happy Christmas (War is Over)  - Plastic Ono Band-   Another song I can never get enough of. And I feel like we need the sentiment of the song now more than ever...

3) Fairytale of New York-The Pouges with Kirsty McColl-  The official Christmas song of Cousin's Christmas. Still captures the thrills and the challenges of living in NYC.

4) Oh, Holy Night -Josh Groban - The older I get, the more I appreciate it.  As my friend Emily E. O'Connor said of it "It tells you everything you need to know about what Christmas means" I can't put it any better than that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17kiIIxSdC0

5) Wonderful Christmastime -Wings- I feel bad knocking Macca down another notch,. But this is still catchy and fun.

6) 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night-Simon and Garfunkel- On one side of your speaker, you hear Simon and Garfunkel singing the classic Silent Night. Out of the other speaker, you hear a newscaster (Charlie O'Donnell of Wheel of Fortune fame according to Wikipedia) reading the news headlines of the day, including the death of comedian Lenny Bruce, the indictment of serial killer Richard Speck, and former Vice President Richard Nixon predicting 5 more years of war in Vietnam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNyqlx0--i0

Depressing, but powerful.  So let's pick it up a little.

7) Christmas in Hollis- Run DMC - I'm not much of a rap fan, but this is the closest song to represent my hometown. The official Christmas song of Queens. Ray told me I had to put this up higher or else I'd have to turn in my Queens passport.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR07r0ZMFb8

8) O Come O Come Emmanuel-Joan Baez- Every year at least once or twice, my hippie parents would gather my sisters and I around the entertainment system, bust out the the incense and the lava lamps, and pop  "A Joan Baez Christmas" into the cassette player

Ok so most of that story is bull, but we did have A Joan Baez Christmas in our collection. It was probably a buck and a quarter at some supermarket, which is most likely the reason someone in my house bought it. This is the one song  I remember from it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq_6seRbB2U

9) Blue Christmas -Elvis/Porky Pig- The Elvis version is a classic by itself, but the Porky Pig version is hysterical.

10) Christmas in New York-Shilelagh Law- I should have had this song on here a lot sooner than this year, but this year for some reason, I'm just feeling it more.

Hey, who put this in here???? Cousin's Christmas

OK here is this year's new feature. A little trivia for ya

So here's a fun fact, all these folks who were born on December 25? According to most theologians, they do not in fact share a birthday with Jesus.

The bible never actually mentions December 25 as Jesus' birthday. In fact, it doesn't mention a date at all. Nobody is actually sure of the exact date of Jesus birth, but many have offered educated guesses based on the scriptures.

For example, the bible mentions "shepherds in the fields tending to their sheep..." At the end of December? Not likely. You know what they say about keeping your pets outside on cold nights, right?

Also the reason Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem was to be counted for the census. The powers that be at the time, even as ruthless as they could be, would not have had people travelling all over the Middle East at that time of year. Most likely it would have been in late September/early October

December 25, was the last day that the pagan festival of the winter solstice was celebrated, so the Christians, specifically newly converted Roman Emperor Constantine, co-opted the day and created Christmas out of that.

And if you thought that I learned any of this in my 12 years of Catholic School, guess again. It was easier and more cost effective just to have us all believe that Deceember 25 was Jesus birthday.

The first person to tell me about Jesus not being born in December was the manager of the first OTB I  worked at, on Grand Ave in Maspeth. This manager, who every other word out of his mouth was usually an f-bomb, told me one of his nephews studied theology in college and he "told me all this $hit"
